REQUEST FOR SUBMISSIONS: Jungle Theater's 2023-2025 Artist Cohort

NOW ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS for our next Artistic Cohort:

Performers, writers, designers, technicians, craftspeople, and administrators – all of whom are crucial parts of the theater-making process – are encouraged to apply.

WHAT IS JUNGLE’S ARTIST COHORT?

The Jungle Theater’s Artistic Cohort is a new leadership model that bridges the divide between theater authority figures and artists by fostering growth, providing mutual aid, and expanding diversity and the range of voices shaping the future of the Jungle.

Cohort artists are on staff year-round and have full access to and input in the theater’s decision-making process, including show selection, budget creation and overall management. The Jungle also provides financial and production resources to support their independent projects. The cohort is a model of mutual aid—sharing experiences, knowledge, and work. The positions are part-time, which allows the cohort members to continue their outside work – we deeply value the connections that each of them brings to outside artists and organizations.

WHAT’S THE JUNGLE’S MOTIVATION IN CREATING THIS PROGRAM?

The traditional American theater model is led by a top artistic leader whose perspective (and all too frequently, biases) shape the work of that company. We feel strongly that it’s time for us to try a new model, with powerful input from additional perspectives. With more voices in the discussion, we believe that the decisions will better serve our mission, our artists, and our audiences.

And now we are looking for submissions for our next Jungle Theater Artistic Cohort! Opening July 28th, Twin Cities artisans are encouraged to apply for the Jungle Theater’s 2023-2025 Artistic Cohort:

WHO can apply? Performers, writers, designers, technicians, craftspeople, and administrators – all of whom are crucial parts of the theater-making process – are encouraged to apply.

WHEN can I apply? The application and details will be available Friday, July 28. Check back to this page or our WORK WITH US page for the application link. Artists will be selected at the end of August and terms will begin September 1, 2023.

CURRENT COHORT MEMBERS:

Angela Timberman (Director/Actor), James Rodríguez (Actor/Dramaturg), JuCoby Johnson (Playwright/Actor), Sequoia Hauck (Filmmaker/Director)

“As a Jungle Cohort member, I have been given a seat at the table to learn how institutional decisions get made and been given the opportunity to be an active participant in the decision-making process. I have been given the opportunity to grow as a writer by having a play supported with workshops and, the ultimate leap of faith, a full production. I’ve become a more capable, more knowledgeable artist from being in this cohort and I hope artists for years to come receive that same opportunity.”

- JuCoby Johnson

“Artists need to be recognized and supported, especially now. Rebounding from the pandemic has put enormous stress on theater makers. The Jungle has encouraged me to strive during a time when I questioned the feasibility of being an artist. Their investment in me is an investment in our community.”

- Angela Timberman

“Being a part of the cohort at the Jungle has been one of the best experiences I have had working in a theater. The opportunities to create my own work in film and directing have been imperative.”

– Sequoia Hauck

“The cohort model has afforded me countless opportunities to further my knowledge of being part of an artistic team, as well as providing a way for me to learn more about myself as an individual artist. The Jungle Theater has been an integral part of the rich and vibrant theater community in the Twin Cities for decades. Their willingness to be open to a new model that centers artists’ growth and uplifts its community is noteworthy and inspiring.”

- James Rodríguez
